Open Access Week: 19 – 23 October 2009

Open access 2009

PROMOTING OPEN ACCESS TO THE UJ SCIENCES COMMUNITY

19 – 23 October is the Open Access (OA) week. The library is taking an initiative to promote OA awareness to all University of Johannesburg users. Below you can see the planned activities on each of the Campus Libraries. Please, attend these lectures in the Library and learn how OA can benefit your teaching, research and learning needs. Ask your students also to participate and learn about OA and Institutional Repository.

What is Open Access? What initiatives are available for OA? What resources I can use, which are Open Access (OA)?

Visit the UJ Sciences Librarian “Open Access Portal” to have your questions answered and much more…. I have created one step to most of the resources relevant to you. Comment on this post, how do you feel about the OA initiative.

OA fact:

Astronomy researchers who made their Astrophysical Journal article open access using the arXiv.org e-print server doubled the citation rate of their articles. (Source: Stevens-Rayburn, Sarah. Account of 2003 AAS Publication Board meeting email to PAM electronic discussion list, November 13, 2003.

I’m highlighting some of the Top Open Access resources. Full list is available on the Open Access Portal:

Open Access initiative is a movement towards opening opportunities for developing countries to have access and to publish their research. Thanks to eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries) and  especially Irina Kuchma, who is visiting many countries, institutions and libraries to promote and train on the usefulness of Open Access and implementation of institutional repositories.

The University of Johannesburg  Library & Information Centre has embark on a various projects this year: One Book One Library (read now, discuss in September), organizing a Conference in 2010 – “The Future is NOW: New Roles and relationships for Academic Libraries“, etc.

One of them involve providing more sitting space for students in the Library. At Kingsway Library the first  30 new  tables were added (25/8/09) on Level 2, next to the Sciences, Health Sciences & Engineering Book Collections. Students have  now 81 sitting tables on that  floor.

More sitting spaces will be available in 2010.

Also coming in early 2010 is the new Library Computer Training room, with 50 seats and 26 computers (currently we have 13 computers). Will keep you posted….

CABI launches enhanced Life Sciences delivery platform

CABI launches enhanced Life Sciences delivery platform

logo_green

CABI has launched a new and improved version of its database platform CAB Direct, incorporating the leading bibliographic databases in life science information – CAB Abstracts and Global Health.

The new CAB Direct offers a better experience for students and researchers as they search for important life science information. The content on CAB Direct has not changed, but the new design will improve its discoverability – saving researchers time and effort.

“Researcher behaviours and expectations are evolving, and the new CAB Direct has been created to ensure we are evolving with them,” said Cristina Ashby, Product Development Manager at CABI. “New technologies have offered an excellent opportunity to create a better, more intuitive and effective product.”

Enhancements include:

  • MyCABDirect – a personalised area where users can set-up email alerts and RSS feeds based on their search results; share information; and save important searches
  • Faceted searching – users can finely filter information to fit their research needs, based on CABI’s indexing terms and metadata
  • The capability to view full text at the search results level
  • Improved user experience, through a more intuitive interface
  • Suggestions for spelling variations

The new and improved CAB Direct will also abstract snippet views at search results level; save searches to social book marking sites and provide COUNTER compliant usage statistics.

CABI is also pleased to announce the number of full text articles available on CAB Direct, and all other platforms that host our products, has reached 50,000.
