DATABASES ON TRIAL (until 14/5/2009)

EbscoHost is giving the UJ users  a TRIAL for “Environment Complete” and “Computers & Applied Science Complete” databases. To access these databases you will need to log-in with your Surname, Student/Staff number and PIN (password). Don’t have PIN, visit the Sciences Librarian “Guides & Tutorials” web page for guidence.

ENVIRONMENT COMPLETE

Offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.

Environment Complete contains more than 1,957,000 records from more than 1,700 domestic and international titles going back to the 1940s (including 1,125 active core titles). The database also contains full text for more than 680 journals and 120 monographs.

 COMPUTERS & APPLIED SCIENCES COMPLETE (CASC)

It covers the research and development spectrum of the computing and applied sciences disciplines.

CASC provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,800 academic journals, professional publications, and other reference sources from a diverse collection.

Full text is also available for more than 730 periodicals.

DATABASES NEWS: 6/02/09

Databases Cancellation:

ProQuest databases were cancelled late in 2008 and the access was discontinued  from February 2009. If you were a regular user of Proquest, now you can make use of the other similar databases: EbscoHost Academic Search Previer; Gale Academic OneFile. Also you can use other academic multidisciplinary databases like:  ScienceDirect, SpringerLink and WileyInterscience (Blackwell journals full-text/ Wiley journals Abstracts only). Education journals full-text are available through Wilson’s Education database.  

Database Upgrade:

SciFinder Scholar will be available ONLINE in 2009. Currently the library is speeding the process of signing the license agreement and the arrangement with the access. More information on how to access and use this database online will follow.

Databases new “look & feel”:

American Chemical Society web page had a new “face” since the end of 2008. You can view all ACS journals in alphabetical order or per subject category. If you want to search for articles, click on the ADVANCED search box. Instructions are available to help you with the search strategy. SAFARI books online  (for IT Professionals) interface has been improved. Access is available for 5 simultaneous users. To search for full-text books, type your keyword and select  “My bookshelf” (400+ titles). These new databases are available to the University of Johannesburg students and staff.

SA Institute of Race Relations The SA Institute of Race Relations is the leading independent research and policy organisation in South Africa. The Institute publishes widely on education, the economy, business, employment, crime, demographics, health, welfare, and politics.

Read the South African Survey Online. Curently the 2007/2008 is available. Split into eight chapters which are regularly updated, this survey provides an overview of the statistics and trends available regarding South Africa.
